The oldest lasting African-American School in Houston
Nurturing Minds, Inspiring Futures
Established in 1966 by forward-thinking educators Beatrice and Thomas Mayes, our mission has revolved around providing outstanding opportunities to empower African-American youngsters.
With a remarkable track record spanning more than five decades, our initiative has evolved from its origins in early childhood education to encompassing pre-k through 8th grade, Wonderland Private School and Beatrice Mayes Institute.
Vision
Wonderland started with educators Beatrice and Thomas Mayes providing special opportunities for local African-American youth.
1966
The couple founded
Wonderland Private School
at Dixie, opening with
30 students.
1985
The Beatrice Mayes Institute
was opened to help expand
the school from kindergarten
to 8th grade.
2001
Beatrice Mayes Institute
became a public charter
school
Today
Wonderland Private and BMI
educate more than
500 students each year
